Here at Umbrage we are pleased to announce our newest release, Grace Before Dying, a photographic documentation of the inmate-staffed hospice program at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola—a project that revolutionized one of America’s most dangerous prisons into one of its least violent.

Photographer Lori Waselchuk, who has shot for Newsweek, LIFE, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times, captures a culture of caring and compassion that challenges stereotypes of the incarcerated, but also provides an intimate and personal perspective on what long-term and life sentences signify for those inside.

Poignant quotes from both volunteers and patients accompany the photographs, along with an essay by Lawrence Powell, a professor of history at Tulane University.

This Sunday, June 26, Film Society of Lincoln Center presents “No Boundaries: Tim Hetherington,” a night celebrating the life and work of the late photographer/filmmaker/human rights activist. The Society will screen Diary, the highly personal and experimental film that explores Hetherington’s own experience as a documentary photographer.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with friends and collaborators, including Carroll Bogert (Human Rights Watch), James Brabazon (Liberia: An Uncivil War), Michael Kamber (Photojournalist, The New York Times) and Jamie Wellford (Newsweek’s International Photo Editor).

Tim Hetherington’s photographic documentation of war-torn Liberia, Long Story Bit by Bit: Liberia Retold, was published by Umbrage Editions in 2009.
