Prison Photography book review: Grace Before Dying

In his review of the book, Pete Brook, the creator of social justice-driven blog Prison Photography, says of Lori Waselchuk’s new monograph Grace Before Dying that “these photos are the starting point” for coming to a deeper understanding of friendship, loss, and the incarcerated. Society’s uneasy relationship with its prisons and prisoners, and the reclaimed humanity of the prisoners themselves, is brought to light in Prison Photography’s full review, which you can read HERE.

KYOPO release, with mention in the Washington Post and BBC!

Congratulations to photographer and artist CYJO, whose new book KYOPO is released today! Also today, the exhibition “Portraiture Now: Asian American Portraits of Encounter” opens at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. If you’re in the D.C. area, stop in to view CYJO’s portraits!

The exhibition was given a thoughtful review over at the Washington Post, featuring CYJO’s composite image of those kyopo she’s photographed.

Also, check out this BBC News clip, covering the exhibition and introduced with CYJO’s portraiture! This is one show that should not be missed!

“We Are Kyopo”: KoreAm August 2011 Issue

KoreAm Journal’s great profile on CYJO (Cindy Hwang), author of forthcoming Umbrage book Kyopo, asks again the open-ended question that those photographed in the book were also confronted with in their interviews: What does being Korean American mean to you?

Obviously a question with no simple answer, the article, in tune with the spirit of CYJO’s project, notes that the best part is that the answer is different for everyone. To that end, you can read more about CYJO and some of the fascinating people she worked with on the project—who are at once defiant, proudly tied to a sense of kinship, and wonderfully self-aware—on the KoreAm website HERE.
