By Kate de Castelbajac
Decade by decade. The Face of the Century offers a lively and thoughtful discussion in text and pictures of the impact of beauty on society. It analyzes changing social attitudes toward makeup, seen throughout the varied windows of Hollywood, fashion photography, art, music, theater, science, and advances in the cosmetic industry itself. The illustrations include high-style portraiture by photographers Beaton, Horst, Newton, and Testino, immortalizing such beauty icons as Mary Pickford, Catherine Deneuve, Josephine Baker, Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Nadja Auermann. Also included is an eclectic survey of advertisement for beauty products and accessories, from international magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Queen, Art Gout, Beauté, and Harper`s Bazaar.
With a timeline charting the highlights of the century in makeup and style, and capsule biographies of the most important individuals and companies who catalyzed these breakthroughs, The Face of the Century offers a resource as well as entertainment for everyone curious about makeup - the universal product.
About the Author:
Author Kate de Castelbajac knows the world of fashion as few others do. Years as a journalist for the international fashion magazines, including French Vogue, In Fashion, and Mirabella helped inspire many of the ideas for this book. A former Ford model, her face was seen on the covers of international magazines and helped to set some of the very trends chronicled in the Face of the Century. Her work with jean-Charles de Castelbajac, one of the leading designers in France, has given her a unique "insider" expertise in the European beauty and fashion world.
